We are Dixie in Foreign Land

My Dixie Life

Embracing Dixie: A Journey Through Time and Place

The remarkable tale of my Dixie existence unfurled amidst a vivid tapestry that transcended boundaries and eras. Our story commenced far from the beating heart of Dixie, as my mother embarked on a daring adventure that carries her beyond its confines. Leaving behind the familiar streets of Louisville, Kentucky, she embarked on a life-changing mission to Shanghai in December 1946. This momentous journey signified the beginning of her transformative odyssey as a missionary in a distant land. Little did we know then, that this awe-inspiring chapter would forever mold the narrative of our family with resilience and unwavering hope.

In 1970, a pivotal juncture emerged, casting a profound shadow over our familial landscape. With the passing of Granddad, a poignant decision took root. United by both blood and heritage, my mother and her two sisters, Martha and Marjorie, found themselves facing a bittersweet crossroads. The ancestral colonial Dutch abode, a living testament to our history, was tenderly handed over to a family captivated by its timeless charm.

Embracing change with courage and determination, my mother made a choice that would shape her future and open up new horizons. With a sense of excitement and anticipation, she embarked on a journey to Richmond, VA, where the warm embrace of Aunt Marjorie’s family eagerly awaited her arrival. As she stepped into this new chapter of her life, the old memories whispered their fond farewells, paving the way for fresh experiences and treasured connections. The branches of our family tree extended in different directions, branching out with newfound vigor, while the unbreakable bond at our core remained strong, infused with the vibrant spirit of the South.

As the years wove their intricate tapestry, Richmond, Virginia became the tapestry’s final thread, a place of rest and reflection in the embrace of the Southern expanse of the United States. In the twilight of her career, Richmond’s welcoming arms cradled my mother, providing solace and a sense of belonging, a testament to the enduring allure of Dixie’s charm.

And then there is me, a blend of cultures and experiences, a product of a life lived across hemispheres and continents. Born in the southern hemisphere of a tropical nation, I spent my formative years in a quaint town, a world away from the land that would later capture my heart. My father, a dedicated member of a medical team, led us on a journey across the diverse tapestry of Asia, each country leaving its indelible mark on my upbringing.

I am an MK and TCK, a living bridge between worlds, a testament to the remarkable journey that began beyond Dixie’s borders. Our lives, a rich tapestry of experiences and connections, continue to unfold, a living tribute to the spirit of exploration and the enduring ties that bind us across time and space.
